【 Yoshi Otsuka 】
1971年、大阪市出身。美術専門学校を出てデザイン事務所に就職しましたが、1995年の阪神淡路大震災を機に退職して、1996年にワーキングホリデーでカナダにやってきました。カナダに入ったのが冬だったため職探しに難航していたところ、イエローナイフの犬ぞりという仕事に出会い、そしてオーロラに出会いました。100匹の犬との暮らしや周辺集落でのレースのサポート、北極圏でイヌイットのハンティングに同行して、極北の生活やインディアン・イヌイットの狩猟生活に強く惹かれました。そして、その生活にはいつも夜空にオーロラが出ていました。帰国後もイエローナイフとの繋がりが深く、2001年にオーロラのガイドとしてイエローナイフに移住。2009年8月より“車でオーロラを追いかける”をテーマに、オーロラの出現や天候に応じて、臨機応変にオーロラ観賞ポイントを決定する移動型ツアーを始めました。
NANOOK ナヌックとは？
イヌイットの言葉でシロクマという意味です。地域によっては『ナヌーク』と発音する所もあります。シロクマは極北の旅のシンボルとして、観光局ロゴや車のナンバープレートとして使用されています。

Prof. Yohsuke Kamide’s interest in bringing solar-terrestrial science to the public was a lifelong passion. Kamide-sensei, as he is known to many, delighted in explaining the wonders of space physics and the way it affected Earth’s atmosphere.

Produced together with aurora guide and photographer Yoshi Otsuka, and with the help of Associate Prof Yusuke Ebihara of Kyoto University, “Enigma of the Skies: Unveiling the Secrets of Auroras” is Prof Kamide’s last gift of this love to us before his death in 2021. The book explains the phenomena and describes how to predict when auroras occur using simple physics alongside a collection of beautiful photos taken both from Earth and from space. Through beautiful photographs captured by auroral enthusiasts and researchers alike, the book beckons readers to visit the northern regions of Earth to see the mesmerizing dance of the solar phenomenon that has intrigued as well as terrified mankind for millennia.
